What Are the Types of Tableware?
Tableware can be categorized into four basic service types – serveware, dinnerware, flatware or silverware and drinkware or glassware. Whether they are used for ordinary days or for special events, there are classes of tableware to suit every occasion.
Serveware – as the name suggests, is used for serving. Serving bowls, platters, gravy boats, salad bowls, dessert bowls, casseroles, soup pots, tea pots and any other dishes that are used to bring food to the table falls under this category. A serving spoon, ladle, pair of tongs or other utensils also comes under this category. Containers used for serving drinks, such as pitchers or carafes are also classified as serveware.
Dinnerware – dinnerware is a type of tableware used to serve individual portions during a meal. Dinnerware consists of a variety of dishes, ranging from the basic plate and bowl to more specialized pieces that are used for specific purposes. It is also known as Chinaware or crockery and is usually made up of ceramic. A formal arrangement of dinnerware depends on the courses of meal served.
Flatware – Flatware includes items such as cutlery and hence is considered the most important type of tableware. They are also known as silverware, which consists of spoons, forks and knives. They may vary in size and shape depending on the variety.
Drinkware – is used to describe any item that can be drunk from. Mugs , cups and glasses come under this category.
Dinnerware include small, big and quater plates, cutlery, tea cups with saucer. Serveware includes serving bowls - big or small, salt and pepper servers
Wine glass – is used to drink and taste wine. It is further characterized into red wine glasses, white wine glasses and champagne glasses. Selection of a particular wine glass is important as the glass shape plays an important role in wine drinking.
Snifter or brandy glass – is a type of stemware, a short-stemmed glass whose vessel has a wide bottom and a relatively narrow top. It is mostly used to serve aged spirits such as brandy and whiskey.
Champagne coupe or champagne saucer – is a shallow, broad-bowled, stemmed glass. It is not only used for serving champagne but also used to make cocktails like daiquiri, a Spanish cocktail.
Champagne flute – is a stem glass with a tall, narrow bowl. The bowl of a flute may resemble a narrow wine glass. It is most commonly used to serve sparkling wines.
Cordial glass – is an elegant glass and is used to serve expensive after-dinner liqueurs.
Sherry glass – is used for serving aromatic alcoholic beverages such as sherry, port or liqueurs.
Beer glass cup or mug – as the name suggests, it is commonly used to serve beer.Borosilicate glass is well-known for its low rate of thermal expansion and less subject to thermal stress. When used as a glass container, it can withstand instant temperature change from -30 ℃ to 150℃. It is widely used on premium wineglass, thanks to its low dispersion and relatively low refractive indices.
